Captain Duncan Nils
Player: Patrick Courtney

Race: Human
Homeworld: Esselles
Sex: Male
Height: 1.8m
Age: 28

Current Command: None
Current Assignment: Apprenticeship to Captain Charis Styria

Appearance: Nils has always prided himself on his appearance. While he would be the first to admit that he is not stunningly attractive, he does have a handsome face and a good physique. He is fairly tall, though not exceptionally so.

Background: To be honest, Duncan knows virtually nothing about his natural parents. He was found on a middle-class family's front doorstep in Camar, Esselles when he was about 6 months old. A note was left on a datacard bearing the inscription "Galaxy-Wide Circus of the Absurd." The note was signed with the name "Nils." Therefore, Duncan's family gave him the surname Nils, while Mr. Duncan Hagg decided it would nice for the child to share his name…hence the first name Duncan.

The Hagg family, his foster family, was fairly well-off. Both of his foster parents worked for a small import/export firm that thrived on the Perlemian Trade Route, and though it didn't make them rich, they were in fact very upper middle class. They also had several good political connections, among them the Imperial governor of the world, whose son was Duncan's best friend in school.

As a child, nothing interested Duncan more than the stars. He did, of course, have a toy Victory-class Star Destroyer (which were all the rage as presents that fete week up and down the Perlemian route), and he always dreamed of having his own Star Destroyer one day—a real one this time. By the time he was 18, he had transmitted an application to the Imperial Academy, which had been pushed through with the help of the governor.

However, scant days before his acceptance notification arrived, the infamous riots broke out in Camar. In the first day, both of Duncan's foster parents were killed when rioters firebombed their "pro-Imperial" shop. For this, Duncan has gained a hatred for the Rebel Alliance, though it is firmly controlled by his exacting manner…he's no longer out for blood.

With nothing left of his past, Duncan bravely decided to move on with his future. He left for the academy three weeks after his foster parents' death, and began preparing himself for a career in the Imperial Navy. Duncan still wanted his Star Destroyer, though by this time it was an Imperial-class that he wanted to command, rather than the Victory-class, of which he had a toy in his childhood.

During his first two years in the Academy, Duncan was the model student. He joined the New Order Party and spent most of his evenings studying in his room. His grades excelled, and he was at the top of his class. He had been driving himself very hard because he still had a desire for revenge on the Alliance. This was when he finally decided to let his bloodlust go…he realized he was letting his life pass him by.

Duncan's Junior and Senior years were much more enjoyable. While he still did study a great deal, he also allowed himself to go out, meet people, and enjoy himself. He was no longer at the top of his class, but he was a better person for it.

At the age of 22, after four years of studies, Duncan Nils received two degrees from the Imperial Academy, a major focus in Advanced Starship Combat Tactics (the ASCT, which most future Naval captains receive) and a minor focus in Naval History. This feat is still the accomplishment which instills in him the most pride. Upon his graduation, Lieutenant Nils was assigned to the position of Chief Navigator on the Deathstroke, a Lancer-class Frigate.

It was during his time on the Deathstroke that Duncan had first gained any degree of attention or notoriety. During a small fleet action, the Deathstroke was badly damaged by rebel fire. Duncan took command of the bridge crew and rallied them until another officer arrived to take command. It was this initiative that would eventually led to his promotion to a command position on the Deathstroke and from there to the ISD Typhon.

By 24, Duncan had already ascended to the rank of Commander and the position of Executive Officer on the Deathstroke. He remained in that position until, due to his exemplary service record, he was reassigned as the XO on an Imperial-class Star Destroyer, the Typhon, under Captain Alexander Nevsky.

This new assignment was made just as Grand Admiral Thrawn was making his move against the New Republic. The Typhon served the Grand Admiral with distinction, participating in several major skirmishes, which included both the battle at Sluis Van and the operation to recapture Ukio. After Thrawn's death at Bilbringi, Captain Nevsky ordered his ship away from the Imperial Civil War that broke out soon after. Shortly thereafter, the Typhon joined the forces being gathered by Trask K'tar.

One year later, the aging Nevsky retired. Captain Duncan Nils was therefore chosen to take command of the mighty Typhon. However, he was given a temporary command under Vice Admiral Viktor Mallagant in the Battle of Vowcat before his new assignment under Captain Charis Styria, the "lone wolf" operative of the Navy that performed special operations for Supreme Commander K'tar himself. He distinguished himself at Vowcat in command of one of Ragnarok Squadron's Carrack Cruisers and received the Medal of Order for his service.

Personality: Nils is the epitome of the Imperial Navy officer, from his core accent to his barely restrained cockiness and pride in his position. He is quite agreeable if you're a friend…and ruthless and remorseless if you're a foe. He is an apolitical Captain, which may either incredibly boost or completely destroy his career.

Nils has a tendency to follow the textbook to the letter in mundane affairs, such as maneuvers and protocol, but he is quickly gaining a reputation for his ingeniousness in battle. His tactics are becoming known as amalgamations of the many tactical options and historical precendents he studied for so long at the Academy.

Among his peers, however, Nils is still a bit withdrawn. Most of his friends from school remember him as "that quiet guy," and most of the people with whom he served only saw him as being a fellow officer. He's trying to change this image, but as he's a fairly shy and introverted person, it's quite difficult for him. He keeps this side of his personality in check while in the line of duty, but his off time is generally a period of solitude.

Objectives: Succeed as a Navy officer for the greater glory of the Empire.

A quote: "Unidentified freighter, I don't care how soon you have to deliver your cargo or who will be upset if it's late…heave to or I will destroy you faster than you can ask your god for forgiveness for your sins."
